This is an excellent book about a young boy named Deming Guo, whose mother never comes home one day, and how he survives without her. Later he is adopted and given the name Daniel. Deming/Daniel is a complex character who is struggling to find his place in the world, straddling two identities, two cultures, American and Chinese, and wondering how to fit in. It's a great coming of age story.

Another book that I will think about for a long time. My heart breaks for the real families this was based on, split up by cruel immigration policies. I hate that the protagonist's name was changed when he was adopted at 11 years old. Deming to Daniel.

Ooh, this one was a heartbreaker and beautifully written. So many challenging themes, adoption, belonging, loss, and social justice. Great on #audio, highly recommend!
