I was entranced. The inhabitants of the Oak Hill Cemetery lived for me as they continued to live for themselves. Evocative of a time, a place and a great man's inner being. A tour de force.

The first 50 pages or so of this book felt so unusual and abstract and difficult to connect with. I kept reading because the writing was beautiful and it was Christmas so why not. About halfway through, I started to appreciate the wildly original and complex structure of the story. There isn’t an accidental word in it. The last 100 pages are heartbreaking and so incredibly effective at making you feel Lincoln’s sadness and impossible predicament. They made me so grateful for a man who somehow ro
