I loved this book, although I was a bit disappointed with the ending as I felt it didn't answer many of the questions that were raised in the story, and seemed somehow open-ended. Freudenberger is a very talented writer who managed to depict the immigration experience externally well, although she herself is not an immigrant. The last book of 2012. I picked it up because i read a good review of the book but also because cardinals are my favorite birds. So many times only the male cardinal is shown but this cover had both the male and female. The story is essentially how two people from different cultures navigate a relationship. Excellent writing style and the story kept my interest.
A sprawling story of love, marriage, culture and family set in a globalized world. The book is very timely as the main character, from Bangladesh, meets an American online and marries him. She moves to America which makes for a complex life.
4.5 stars...loved it. Great character development, and very real life scenarios.
Nice story, some cultural perspectives, but utterly too many leaps of faith required by reader to accept some of these characters and plot twists.
