I read this book as part of my quest to read a book from every country on my home planet. This is the Democratic Republic of Congo (which I keep getting mixed up with the Republic of Congo, no doubt due to arbitrary colonial border-drawings but which books help me to distinguish).

This book is of the literary prize arty variety that reminds me of 1920s experimentation and that I these days find a struggle to read. In my youth and my then-arrogance, I prized such novels highly and I can still see

I read a reasonable amount of African fiction in translation, and this Congolese novella sounded exciting. Unfortunately, I just couldn't ever fall into the rhythm of the prose, which zigs and zags in brief bursts. I suppose I should have known better, as plenty of reviewers have compared it to jazz or beat poetry -- of which have ever resonated with me.
