A nice quick , creepy read which gets even creepier after you turn the last page, put the book down, and start thinking about it...I was genuinely spooked, which doesn't happen much with the wealth of werewolf and vampire and forensic/suspense/exploding heads/rotting corpse books I read for fun these days! This is one pissed-off ghost, who has every reason to be pissed off. She's out for revenge and it makes her not the least bit of nevermind whether her chosen victims deserve it or not.

Who says they can't make them like they used to? This is a terrific tale, among the best in the genre. I'd compare it to some of Edith Wharton's ghost stories, with a dollop of Daphne du Maurier on the side.
Unfortunately, I can't say a lot about the story without giving it away, but I will say it's an engrossing read. At about 150 pages, it's the perfect book for a cold winter's night. Build a fire, turn down the lights, curl up on the couch, and prepare to enter a dark world. ...more

I can imagine this being really scary when acted on stage - I remember narrowly missing the production/musical version of this in London. As a story, though, it is rather unsatisfying. It is almost wholly an atmospheric novel, depending heavily on the oppressiveness of the marshes and mysterious shrieks and creaks for the horror factor. The plot is rather thin, and I'm quite sure I'll forget the reason for the hauntings a few months later.

Listened to the audiobook narrated by Paul Ansdell who did it so well, the gothic atmosphere was intensified. I see what they're trying to do by calling this an Austen-style ghost story but Austen didn't write as fast-paced as this. For a classic, it can hold itself well next to contemporary thrillers that compete against social media for our attention. I was listening to this while dozing off but one part jolted me awake, the part about him feeling a presence, so I stopped listening to it in th

Came upon this one in the library's recommended shelf. It was really scary! Good book for this time of year. It's a really quick read, but don't read it when you're home alone!
