I really enjoy Fforde's humor and this was a great escape read, which is exactly what I was looking for. This is the story of a sixteen year-old foundling who runs an employment agency for sorcerers. There was a small battle scene at the end, which I could've done without, but it's a fantasy series; what did I expect? I'm definitely continuing on with it. The laughs were priceless, and there were a couple of surprises I really didn't expect.

I'm not a big fantasy fan, but Fforde has such a way with worhds that I enjoy his contributions to the genre. He expects his reader to have a brain and use it. ...more

This book was fun to read, Fforde has such a great sense of humor.

Fforde is a favorite of mine, largely because I love the way he spins out worlds that are so far-fetched and yet somehow so plausible, and this is no exception. Jennifer's an appealing protagonist (particularly to a bureaucrat such as myself) and her supporting cast charms, so much that I desperately want a stuffed quarkbeast.
