Deeply researched, the narrative is almost random and only incidentally follows the layout of his home. This is more a survey of 19th century lifestyles and their intersections with house and home.
Regardless of the purported theme, Bryson writes so well and engagingly that I don't really care when he meanders off down yet another side street (or hallway).
