I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book because my intention was to get another fiction book under my belt. The whole reading the news to people in your psychical presence and everyone attentively watching was a good reminder to "how things used to be." Now in days most of the news we consume comes from many sources and in solitude. 3.5 Really enjoyed it after about I got halfway through. At first I had some trouble getting into it as it is written in an old-fashioned style with dialogue not in quotation marks...and just generally the subject didn't interest me too much. The story, set in 1870ish, 70-year-old news reader in Texas is tasked with returning "Joanna" -- a 10-year-old girl who was kidnapped by the Kiowa tribe --it has an Oregon Trail vibe to me (at first kind of imagined this as a school-assignment type ...more
