I would give Little Fires Everywhere 3.5 stars. I thought the beginning third was slow, which is a significant chunk of the book. Once the pace picked up and it became more obvious which characters we were supposed to focus on of the many detailed, I found it enjoyable but nothing earth shattering. Once I was finished, I had the urge to reread the beginning, as if I missed something and all of those banal details in the first third would make more sense and they did. Another really popular book that I did not enjoy. This one tells the story of the Richardsons, an affluent yet dysfunctional family, who live in a posh Cleveland suburb. They rent a house to a single mom with a teenage daughter who befriends the Richardson's teenage children. The friendship ends up revealing secrets from both sides and a causes a rift between the two after the town deals with a controversial cultural adoption case experienced by friends of the Richardsons. Celeste Ng's masterful writing has left me self-conscious about how inadequate my own words are to describe it. There are no extraneous sentences in this work, no threads dropped. And above all, it is a masterwork in empathy. Recommended for everyone. Please read it.
