Best Served Cold the title is alluding to the proverbial saying "Revenge is a dish best served cold." Interestingly this fantasy book is more about a well spun literary journey into the darkness of revenge and actually very little fantasy elements. Joe Abercrombie is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. I found “Best Served Cold” to be an excellently written, character driven, unapologetically adult fantasy story that I have come to expect from this author. I find this style a refreshing departure from the tired and young adult-ish feel of typical fantasy writing. I’m forcing myself to read a non- Abercrombie novel next to sort of cleanse my palate but next in line after that is “Red Country” (I previously read ”The Heroes” which w ...more

The underlying theme underneath all the blood and gore - revenge destroys everything, especially those who pursue it. Not a story for the weak of heart. Abercrombie has a D&D background and the story reflects it... an intrepid but deeply flawed set of companions set out on a revenge quest, lots of betrayals and 180 degree turns along the way.

Encourages me to pursue more of his work. There are connections to a previous trilogy. Not essential to appreciate the story but would have probably put a
