Joe Abercrombie is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. I found “Best Served Cold” to be an excellently written, character driven, unapologetically adult fantasy story that I have come to expect from this author. I find this style a refreshing departure from the tired and young adult-ish feel of typical fantasy writing. The underlying theme underneath all the blood and gore - revenge destroys everything, especially those who pursue it. Not a story for the weak of heart. Abercrombie has a D&D background and the story reflects it... an intrepid but deeply flawed set of companions set out on a revenge quest, lots of betrayals and 180 degree turns along the way.
