As one with high aspirations for the human race, in spite of its frequently embarrassing stumbles (wars, politics, persistent absence of flying cars, etc.), the premise and final revelation of this tale saddened me somewhat. The Overlords come to Earth, halting millennia of strife and suffering amongst humanity, yet at a price--essentially the end of extraterrestrial human exploration. Incredibly ambitious, somewhat cold and with some rather clever ideas (including the paranormal) this is a classic ACC novel. He was never afraid to “go big” with his ideas, but this was a tough one to even try to pull off.

Like a lot of others, this book had been sitting on my bookshelf for some considerable time! So glad I have final dusted it off and read it. A good read overall, it will be interesting to see this adapted into the forthcoming TV mini series.
