This book has been on my "to read" shelf since The Empire Strikes Back was in theaters. I just had never gotten around to reading it.
The premise is now a cliche: Large alien ships show up and hover over major world cities. The good news is that these aliens do not present mankind with a cookbook, nor are they reptiles intent on stealing Earth's water. They also do not blow up world landmarks only to be defeated by Will Smith and a Mac.

I read this book years and years ago. I remember being completely blown away by it at the time. I've always wanted to
re-read it but never got around to it. I believe that it was one of the inspirations to the "Independence Day" movie (starring
Will Smith), and I've also read and heard the Clarke was experimenting with psychedelics when he wrote this book... I remember
being fascinated by the Overlords... I really need to re-read this ... ...more

the story line was interesting initially but I was actually really unhappy with the ending...
The interaction between the Humans and the Overlords was the best part of the story. The control they exerted without violence -- just the threat (or the show of what they COULD do if they chose to) was enough to make the humans fall into line. Even the "rebellious humans" were tame in what they tried to do.
The book and writing was good enough for me to rate it a 3 but that's the highest I could go. The ...more
