I experienced this as an audiobook and I wonder if I would have enjoyed this as much if it had been an "eyeball read". Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed this first foray into a well-known series. The politics added many layers and sub-plots that I found quite interesting. I put off reading this novel for a while, somewhat dreading it, but it turns out to be great! After reading 2 novels with Miles, this tale of how his parents Aral and Cordelia met and fell in love promised to be a bore. But it was a thrilling adventure tale that pushed the envelope in many unexpected ways. I couldn't believe some of the things revealed about Aral Vorkosigan's past. Lovely fully developed characters, original storyline and lots of action make this a very enjoyable and easy read. I began this in response to my poor reaction to “Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen” and was pleased to see that early Bujold lives up to the hype. Subtly subversive, and a ton of fun, this is a great read, especially for young adults I reckon.
