Lois McMaster Bujold wrote Shards of Honor, The Warrior's Apprentice, and Ethan of Ethos at around the same time, in 1986. They were then sold and published at the same time by Baen Books. They're all part of the Vorkosigan Saga, which now numbers 30 novels and short stories, almost all of which center around the brilliant, broken, and charismatic Miles Vorkosigan. Shards of Honor is one of those "almosts," because Miles is nowhere to be found. It's the story of his parents meeting and falling i

8/24/2011 I've been rereading Bujold recently (this is really about the Vorkosigan saga, not just this book) and noticing things I didn't notice my first... or fifth... or tenth time through - like:
1. Cordelia isn't as perfect as I thought she was (but that's okay - in fact I think I love/respect her even more for it) - she makes some glaring mistakes and sometimes her verbal analysis of problems is hurtful in a bad way, not in a helpful way

Read the paperback an unknown number of times.
1st time through the audiobook in 2012 - still soooo good (I don't think that's enough 'o's for the 'so')
Rereading/listening spring 2013 due to a group read. Still need more 'o's for 'so'.
3rd read: Nov 7-15, 2014
2nd read: ?-Apr 9, 2013 ...more

While I enjoyed this novel, I did not like is at much as I enjoyed Falling Free. The characters underwent less change - both Cordelia and Vorkosigan started out honorable and good, and they ended that way. I guess I like character arc and learning. Also, Cordelia seems to have things happen TO her rather than make things happen.
On the other hand, Bujold addressed some other social topics like the issue of rape and abortion. Vorkosigan, while not a point of view character, did undergo some growth ...more
