Early in his magical education, the principle narrator of The Magicians comments that magic is a largely tedious discipline, one that requires an enormous amount of time and effort for the little bit of awesome that it gives you. That observation fairly sums up this book for me. Grossman's choice to focus on the long-term growth of his characters into adulthood and its accompanying disillusionment is initially a wise and interesting one.
