This is a book that is very difficult to get into because it presents so many new concepts all at once: a dormant godlike computer virus on the edge of the galaxy; races of humanoids, tree-like beings who move along in motorized planter boxes, and doglike aliens who are sentient only in packs; and a new way of viewing the galaxy as having increasing layers of technological complexity based on distance from the center.

This one started out a bit slow for me. I kept at it because I didn't have anything else to read at the time, and I'm glad I did. The story was good. The main bad guy, the Blight, is never really explained well, and the end of the book left me kind of meh on how it all wrapped up. It took me a long time to get attached to the dog-like race. I'm not an animal fan and being inside their heads was just not as fun as other parts of the story. But overall I enjoyed it and will probably pick up anothe
