This book was an awesome beginning to an awesome series. Admittedly I saw the movie before I considered picking up this trilogy, but I don't regret the order in which I did so. I know many people who read the book then saw the movie, and not many of those people enjoyed the movie. For me, this book was so well done that I see the movie as a separate entity with a different enough topical story line that they are completely unique in my mind.

This wasn't something I would have chosen to read - dystopian is not my thing - but someone gave me the audiobook so I went ahead and listened to it. Emma Galvin's narration was good for the story but quiet and monotonous. A lot of violence - much of it gratuitous to my way of thinking - and a lot of filler - seemingly in order to create a series out of something that could have been done in one or two books. The first half of this book was captivating but I had a little trouble towards the end. In a future world people are divided into factions or the factionless. The factions had uniforms, responsibilities and shared in the wealth and opportunities of the city. Those who were factionless were restricted to menial labor like carpentry (yep that is what Roth wrote) and end up begging on the streets. I will admit I watched the movie first and that was my introduction to this trilogy. The movie intrigued me so I felt compelled to read the book. With a few deviations, I felt I was just reading the screenplay as the movie followed the book so closely- that's why it didn't engage me as well as it could have. I did learn more about what each faction stood for and valued and why they were created to begin with. I will be looking to read the other two books in the series.
