Senseless violence and an equation that violence and cruelty =s bravery. Do not go against the faction; do not break the rules. Hell, don't even question the rules. Do stupid mean life endangering acts and equate this to being brave because you didn't chicken out or you allowed someone to smash in your face or throw knives at you. Oh yeah, you are also fearless if you jump onto or off of moving vehicles without injury to life or limb. The books theme seemed to be bullies are cool and we rule bec

I am glad that I finally gave this book a chance. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't really like Beatrice/Tris but I did enjoy Four/Tobias. I gave it four stars because of this fact. Although this book is good, I don't think it may have deserved most of the hype that it has received. I like how the story flowed and the world was nice. There could have been more details about some of the other factions except for Dauntless and Abnegation. I might end up pi

Perhaps a fault of my own, It took awhile for me to shake the feeling of a hunger games knockoff. I really didn't enjoy this book. I think the author has been too ambitious. There is a lot of the story the could have been explored in more detail. I was left wanting a lot more than what I got. This first book could have easily been made into two separate books and been much more enjoyable. I never connected with much of the supporting characters. Ooooh big fan big fan big fan!
There are a fair few weak elements - Tris starts to get pretty damn annoying because she's full of teenage anxieties (yes I'm aware she's a teenager) about how she supposedly thinks she looks like a 12-year-old, ergo Four could never love her etc etc etc YAWN reinforce obsessions with body image yada yada. Four is also a silly name, however logical the reason is.

I will admit I watched the movie first and that was my introduction to this trilogy. The movie intrigued me so I felt compelled to read the book. With a few deviations, I felt I was just reading the screenplay as the movie followed the book so closely- that's why it didn't engage me as well as it could have. I did learn more about what each faction stood for and valued and why they were created to begin with. I will be looking to read the other two books in the series.
