I really enjoyed this book. I thought the characters and the plot were very well written. I love the idea off Maisie as a main character to have her own detective agency in 1929. I know this is the first book in the series, but when I started the book I expected a mystery. It never really happened until towards the end. This was a bit more complicated than a run-of-the-mill mystery, and was set against the backdrop of WWI and how it affected the British populace. I really liked it.
One aspect of the writing I wasn't thrilled with was the structure. I had gotten involved in the 1920's part of the story in the first section, and it was rather frustrating when the second section was a flashback to Maisie's time before and during WWI. Didn't realize that I would enjoy this book as much as I have. It's a wonderful story about a bright young woman who, in spite of her humble origins, is able to attain her potential. Maisie becomes a private detective, modelling her life after her mentor, Maurice Blanche. Devouring classics and philosophical tomes, she earns a place in a women's college.
