A really solid mystery thriller.

This one had me hooked from the very first chapter/prologue and kept me guessing all the way to the last few pages.

The main character was very likable - she was strong but she was also human which made her highly relateable. I also felt like I was completely with her throughout, by about halfway I was as paranoid as she was and suspected literally everyone!

This is a well written and clever novel and after that ending I just have to find out what happens next!

Rachel Caine is one of those authors whose works I’ve always enjoyed, and yet, I’ve never managed to finish a series by her. I always get distracted by other books and then am faced with having to do a reread in order to remember what happened in previous books. I have a strong feeling that pattern has just been disrupted, as I could not put Stillhouse Lake down, and am already halfway through the second book as I write this review.

Honestly, there is not one thing I disliked about this book. Fro Rachel Caine is one of those authors whose works I’ve always enjoyed, and yet, I’ve never managed to finish a series by her. I always get distracted by other books and then am faced with having to do a reread in order to remember what happened in previous books. I have a strong feeling that pattern has just been disrupted, as I could not put Stillhouse Lake down, and am already halfway through the second book as I write this review.

Honestly, there is not one thing I disliked about this book. From the first chapter, as we see Gina (now Gwen) discover the horrors her husband has been hiding, the book just takes off, and the tension never lets up. I spent most of my time reading with my heart in my throat, wondering what in the world was going to happen next.

I connected instantly with Gina/Gwen. As the book goes on, we see how strong she has had to become in order to protect her children from people who want to hurt them just because of what their father did, something that I have trouble even comprehending. Not that I don’t believe there are people out there like that. I do. It’s just hard for me to wrap my mind around that logic. It made me sick to read about the things people would email Gwen, or what they would post on message boards about her and her children. It felt like a Law and Order: SVU episode come to life. In other words, you have to have thick skin to get through this book. It definitely has some dark moments.

It’s in Gwen’s relationship with her kids that the book really shines. As a mother myself, albeit to younger kids, I found myself constantly thinkgin about what I would do in this situation. Watching Gwen try to navigate the difficult waters of being a parent to an 11-year-old and a 14-year-old while also trying to keep them safe from those who would do them harm, I felt my love of her as a character grow even more. It felt very real, even if the istuatoin itself is out of my realm of experience.

This book was a non-stop page-turner. I was never bored and constantly pushed myself to read faster so I could find out how it was all going to end. Fans of suspense/thriller novels should definitely do themselves a favor and pick this book up. I am definitely going to be reading as much of Rachel Caine’s work as I can get my hands on! ...more
