I’ll admit, I had a hard time getting into this book. But once I did, it was hard to put down. For me, this was really a book about family, especially parents and children, and how you can never really know one another. That distance, which is maintained for so many reasons (mostly pure), is often insurmountable until it’s too late. The ending was disappointing but understandable and drove home the injustices of war.

So good. It's an epic with a narrow focus and I think that serves her well for such a sweeping story. I really appreciate the new focus on women's perspectives in historical fiction recently and she did such a good job with it here. I do feel like it could have been tighter in the beginning -- I really got into it around page 200 or so. However, I feel like a lot of that story was needed to establish the characters, so I don't think it needed to be cut down THAT much. I loved both the main chara
