This is an incredibly awkward book to review. There are no pretensions about that fact. This book is simply difficult for me to review.

The language is beautiful and it's well written, haunting even, but there's something about the story that makes it difficult to love. I originally gave it five stars but I dialled it back to four after thinking a little more about how the book has stayed with me. This is an amazing read! I knew as I was reading it that this story would be one that would stick with me for a long time. It's a beautiful story mixed with a heavy dose of heartache. I know this is labeled as a YA novel, but I think it goes way beyond that. This is a book for everyone, a truly great novel.

Shelves: historical-fiction, 2000-s, 21st-century, war, set-in-germany, magical-realism, world-book-night-2012, to-see-film, wwii-fiction

This book is classified as a young adult book and therefore I should probably have read it a few years ago, however I would argue that this book is open to all and is a fantastic book, beautifully written. Secondly when looking through the reviews someone said this book was not a quick read, I read 300 pages of it in an afternoon so for me it was a very quick read.
