This is a reread for me, but it's been many years.
I don't think I was as enamored this time around...at least with parts of it. I think I'd really give this 3.5 stars but I rounded up. I loved the beginning. Felt it started to drag after the church scene and stayed that way until Jane hears her name whispered. And it's a long period through there. It also seemed quite contrived and I just wasn't buying it. Perhaps I'm better leaving the gothic romances in the past when I was younger and more car ...more

Everyone probably knows that Jane Eyre is one of my favourite classics - although I am still a bit in doubt about the age difference between our main characters, mainly because 18 is really young in my head, but Jane's hard life did make her mature faster, plus the times were different (?). I do think that when analyzing a book we should consider the times it was written and published in, but it's also hard not to add a touch of our modern times into the analysis. Do I even make sense? Whatever,

Oh, what to write about Jane Eyre?
Classics always intimidate me. I don't know if its the language or the somewhat differing ideals that I tend to think that a classic book will have that will create a disconnect between me and the characters from the get-go. Or maybe it's because I always fear that classic books will go above my head (I clearly need to give myself at least a bit more credit) and that I won't appreciate what an "old" book has to offer. I was an idiot because, guys, I appreciated ...more

I've attempted to read Jane Eyre several times in my life, but this time the book held my attention and I was surprised how much I liked the story. I didn't think much of Mr. Rochester (I need to read Jane Steele), but I liked Jane's independent character.

OH my gosh..
I had no idea how much I would love this book.
It sounded so boring and uninteresting and I have to say I loved it and didn't want it to end.
So well written and I really felt I was back in time...with all the lovely well described characters.
2023! I reread this as maybe the second or third book I have ever read more than once. And I have to say it was just as wonderful 25 or more years later. One of my all time favorite books. It may not be for you if you don’t enjoy very long descrip ...more

I really liked this one - except I thought Mr. Rochester was somewhat unsympathetic. Jane is a great heroine and it really went outside the realm of what I expected from a British novel of this age (hints of something dark and supernatural happening and Jane fleeing and almost dying of starvation). Great story.
My all-time favorite! Timeless and beautifully written. The most inspiring literary character I've ever come across.
