"The Classic Tale of Romantic Suspense" cover blurb doesn't lie. The first half of the book is dedicated to the "romantic" part, with long lush Home & Garden-porn descriptions of the lavish decor and grounds of the fictional English country estate of Manderley, interwoven with the endless neurotic blatherings of the World's Most Insecure Narrator which can be best summarized as "he loves me, he loves me not." 2.5 stars. I admit I am not a big fan of mysterys so maybe that tainted my reading of this book but I really was getting annoyed with the book while reading it. I realize the author was trying to be descriptive in her writing. I kept thinking GET TO THE POINT. Although the narrator was described as young and naive, I just found her to be stupid, especially with Mrs. Danver's setting her up at the ball, it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me.


So, here I am, nearly 50, and reading Rebecca for the first time. I know. I know!. It's one of the few novels that my mother (who usually has no time for fiction) loves, too.
