Willa Cather writes impeccable, precise prose and paints the vivid landscapes she describes so beautifully that she transports me there. Up until now all of the Cather books I have read take place on the prairies of the midwest, so I was surprised to find that this one occurs in New Mexico. It is a book that centers on two priests, but is less a book about faith than it is a book about people and place. The history is well-researched and full of information that was new to me. The places describ ...more

A beautiful book about the West that was as delightful to read as Stegner’s Angle of Repose although it’s not as emotionally complex. (Sidebar: Just based on the number of times the word “repose” appears in this book, there’s no way Stegner wasn’t influenced by this novel.) Amazing descriptions of the New Mexico landscape. Cather weaves in the story of a life the archbishop in Santa Fe from the 1850s to 1880s. The first 50 pages and last 50 pages were gripping. The Archbishop first has to make it and then later confronts death and the loss of his closest friend.

For some it was all about the Catholic Church. Others were adamant that it had not so much to do with religion, but was a perfect and tender portrayal of a male friendship. A friendship in which one person is all 'heart' and the other all 'head'.
Others in the group focused on the historic events, the changes that were happening, about conquered and exploited people. Those

I tried, I really did. This slight book of about 150 pages has been sitting in my kindle taunting me for over a month, daring me to pick it up and die of boredom. I have read 50%. It's been like pulling teeth, managing to force myself to get that far along in the story. I would rather do just about anything over reading this book, it's that dull. I give up. Life is too short. There are too many other excellent books out there that I want to read, that are worthy of my time.

I have read Cather's n
