Oh boy, I might have to get around to Moby-Dick or, The Whale sooner than intended, which I know is a different beast entirely, but this little story is great. A sad yet often comical story about Bartleby, a scrivener who copies by hand legal documents for his lawyer boss, the narrator. Fed up with the repetition of his work he decides one day that he would prefer not to do any of it. Though published in 1853, it's surprisingly relevant to the day-in-day-out of adult life today. I am so disappointed. The time spent building characters that fall right out of the story, and the build up of curiosity in the book's whole reason for being, the excitement! waiting for the twist in the plot, you know this is going to be good, you just know that right around the corner is the meaning behind the irrational behavior! This deeply touched me. I thought Melville was taking me along for a comical ride, but he abandoned me in melancholy.

Starts off funny, gets funnier, and ends a little sad.

I really enjoyed this one. I wasn't expecting this to be so humorous after listening to so many people complain about how dull Moby Dick is.
