What Members Thought
4.5 stars rounded up.
John Williams wrote a beautiful, quiet and spare novel about a quiet and spare man. This slim volume delves into the life, learnings and thoughts of one man. It is unexceptional. It is almost boring. And yet, it is completely enchanting. I loved every word.
According to Wikipedia, John Williams wrote Stoner in 1965, and it was out of print within a year. Only 2000 books were sold. But, it has been reprinted three times since, and I am so glad that it has.

Finished Stoner last week. Best fiction I have read in a while. I saw a review that called it an example of Linear Realism; pretty much nails it. No literary tricks, just a -> b. Very refreshing. Also really liked the writing. Not as ornate as McCarthy, but good nonetheless. It may have been my imagination, but it seemed like there was more description and inner thoughts as the story went along.
Also the tone of the book was very unemotional or atonal which fit the protagonist perfectly.
