I'm quite surprised I haven't read this book before! For a good way through the book, I thought perhaps I had, but the ending really surprised me, so now I think it's my first time through. Of all the themes in this short novel, I was most taken by the friendship and loyalty between George and Lennie, as well as their dream of a better life for themselves. ...more

So much emotion packed into such a small book! Poignant and emotionally heavy. It examines the depth of interpersonal relationships, the struggle for those who do not fit into societies’ expectations, and how far we are willing to go to protect those we love. Have a tissue ready.

I understand completely while this continues to be a favorite among the classics. Steinbeck is a master novelist and his characters and descriptions stand the test of time. The ending though!!!
