Matilda is in the line of those weird British books where the adults mistreat and misuse the kids and they band together to take their revenge. You have to admire Matilda, a genius who gets along well with others and is modest. But the humor comes from her being mistreated by her parents and headmistress and getting revenge on them. The headmistress, in particular, is very verbally abusive to all the children.
