The mother of all Antarctic horror stories, and probably an inspiration for Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr. which you may know better by the movie version "The Thing." Lovecraft blends the Antarctic adventure story, which had so captivated the world during the Shackleton and Byrd expeditions of the early 20th century, with his own Cthulhu Mythos. I want to give this book 2 stars (or more) just because I know that there is something I am missing. So many smart readers have given it much higher ratings. The problem is I didn't like it at all. I didn't find it fascinating like the science fiction books I have loved. I didn't find it startling or scary like the horror books I have loved. Wow, this was an experience. This novel was both a fine horror novel and also one of the hardest to read books, I've read. I struggled mightily with it for 2 days and finally resorted to getting an audio version so I could follow along. I played the audio at 1.40 speed, which approximated my reading speed. I was finally able to finish it. I read as much in an hour and a half with the audio as I had by reading alone. H. P. Lovecraft in this story was throwing both an encyclopedia and a thesaurus ...more

I don't think it's quite as "good", but it's interesting, more Jules Verne/Jack London/H. Rider Haggard style story. Don't get me wrong, it has the Lovecraft slimy horror stamp :-D I just find the giant blind albino penguins ridiculous :-D ...more
