I must say it was excellent. Quite the page turner. I enjoyed Emma's character even when I know I probably shouldn't. But I could relate to her at times. Charles was a fool, who I didn't pity or feel sorry for. At first yes I did, and first I liked his character but, I guess you'll just have to read it for yourselves to understand why I feel the way I do towards him.

Right now I feel like four stars is the more accurate rating, but I can easily imagine myself reading this again years later and giving it a full five.
I presume Flaubert wanted the reader to dislike almost all the main characters, or at least to consider their motivations for their dislikeable behaviour. I mean, that's just what I have gathered from some reviews I've stumbled upon sporadically over the years. I hate to admit it, but I found Charles infuriating at times. I have to say, I found this book terribly difficult to get through. I despised Emma and really didnt think highly of any of the characters. It didnt even hold my interest at all until the world came tumbling down on her. Hope I enjoy the next classic I read much more. But I am told Flaubert has much more interesting work to explore. Maybe down the road...
Flaubert tells the story of Emma Bovary, a young naïve woman who marries a simple small town doctor. Emma reads romantic literature and is unable to distinguish reality from fiction. She begins to yearn for refinement and starts spending money on objects that she cannot afford – going into debt. Emma eventually begins an affair with Rodolphe who abandons her and then Leon.
