3.5***

From the book jacket: After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he’s still in good health, and one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn’t interested (and he’d like a bit more control over his alcohol consumption). So he decides to escape, embarking on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey.

Key Stone Cops meets Forest Gump and moves to Sweden in this slap stick farcical comedy. I did not find the ridiculous situations remotely humorous and was offended by the use of violence to generate laughs. The writing was simplistic and repetitive giving it a juvenile feel. I am certain that many will appreciate the humor in this novel, but I did not. 1.5 stars

What a fascinating imagination the author has! I thoroughly enjoyed the winding tale from start to finish. So many great characters and places. Enchanting!

Another book that should not be read while your partner is sleeping. An enjoyable read.

Cute story about a Centenarian who doesn’t want to be the focus of a birthday party at the retirement home he lives in so he decides to leave. What follows is a back and forth between his current journeys and the story of his life which involves not only leaders like Stalin, Kim Jung Il, Roosevelt, and Truman, but also the atomic bomb.

While this wasn’t as good as some of the Swedish novels I have read, it was still very entertaining and comical.

2.5 stars, but I'm rounding down due to gratuitous violence, including a brief mention of violence towards animals. Now, I'm not opposed to violence; indeed, I can't imagine Lord of the Flies, or even A Game of Thrones, without bloodshed (also, Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies, so, yeah). There's a difference, though, between violent episodes that serve to establish the stakes within a particular fictional world, and violence that exists just to advance the plot. The former has emotion ...more

A rounded-up 2.5 really. This was good for light holiday reading, but it was never as funny as it thought it was. It was pretty smug and condescending in places, most notably when summing up historical events or politics. However, black humour isn't really my thing, so I'm not the obvious target audience.

This was a silly book about a centenarian and his crazy life where he stumbled into meeting most heads of state. The book was entertaining but too far fetched. It reminded me of Forrest Gump.

I found this story boring and way too long. Was able to finish, thankfully.
