I really loved this book with the exception of a couple of quibbles, which is why I'm giving it four stars instead of five while reserving the right to bump it up later when I've digested it a bit more.
This book has everything we've come to love in a Liane Moriarty book. Interesting, interconnecting story lines of people similar to those we know or whom we think we know. When Alice hits her head after falling off her bike in a spin class, she loses 10 years of her memory. She wakes up thinking I really loved this book with the exception of a couple of quibbles, which is why I'm giving it four stars instead of five while reserving the right to bump it up later when I've digested it a bit more.
This book has everything we've come to love in a Liane Moriarty book. Interesting, interconnecting story lines of people similar to those we know or whom we think we know. When Alice hits her head after falling off her bike in a spin class, she loses 10 years of her memory. She wakes up thinking she's only 29, she's deliriously in love with her husband, Nick, and they're expecting their first baby. They're struggling to rehab an old house on little money but, hey, they've got lots of love. Imagine her surprise when she's told she's really 39, she has three children, and she's in the middle of a really nasty divorce from Nick. Oh, and her shy, retiring widowed mother has married Nick's father and taken up salsa dancing. We learn more about Alice's story through the journal entries and letter writing of her sister, Elizabeth, who is struggling with infertility, and Alice's "honorary" grandmother, Franny, who is constantly writing letters to an old lover. We also learn Elizabeth and Franny's stories, and Elizabeth becomes a character you will really feel for. (In fact, those dealing with fertility issues need to be warned that this can be a difficult read.) Over it all hangs the shadow of a woman named Gena.
The quibbles: Alice's children are precocious, annoyingly precocious. Every. Single. One. of. Them.
Of course, it would ruin the story if someone filled Alice in on the past 10 years of her life all in one big info dump, so bits and pieces are revealed over the course of a couple of days. And I just hate stories where critical pieces of information are missing solely because no one asked the obvious question. But mostly --- and here's the spoiler, so look away . . . . . .
