Caraval was a fun, enjoyable read. Why just 3 stars? There was not much character growth or maturation. I'm left with the feeling that I don't truly know a single character besides Crimson. Whom is a bit predictable. The world building and magic system both need some considerable work. We truly get no insight to either of these items. But, it is the first book in a series, so there is the hope that the author grows and develops. I feel similar to after reading Throne of Glass. I'm hopeful, it wi ...more

Imagine The Night Circus and "Mafia the Party Game" reproduced by order of a Venetian Doge. Their precocious offspring would resemble Caraval .

Scarlett Dragna plays the lead in a story about an elaborate role play meta-game. Meta because rules prohibit all but winners from playing the game a second time, likely because once the game is realized and connections and actors revealed it would grant too large an advantage.
