The Prose

Books set in post-apocalyptic settings usually have an ominous feeling about them. You will start to get that vibe from the very first line. The Handmaid's Tale (THT) wasn't different in that regard.
Consider the following lines and you will see what I mean:

"We slept in what had once been the gymnasium.

This book terrified me - not in the creepy monster in the closet way - but in the "this can be our future" way.

I look at our Vice President elect and his views and say - this could happen. I look at global warming and say - this could happen. I look at "Make America Great Again" and say this could happen.

I look at the egotistical, orange reality show host who has no idea what the constitution even means and say to myself - this could happen.
