The time setting, the 30's, was another character in the story. It was so well crafted that the reader was drawn in seamlessly. There was no need to hit the reader over the head explaining the time period. It was done through the actions of the characters and their reactions to each other. I was reminded of wonderful classic mysteries of the 30's and 40's.

Usually I devour a book but I truly enjoyed savoring this one. I love Josh's understated, nuanced style. His research is so meticulous that I felt like I got a free history lesson for 1930's San Francisco--which I loved. I must have stopped a dozen times to look up references he made in the book on the internet to learn more about them. Not at all necessary to enjoy the book--just my thing. Really loved this book!
