What Members Thought
In a totally shocking and absolutely not-at-all-foreseeable turn of events, this was a great short story right up until the end. More surprising, it actually wasn't the emotional/relationship aspect that felt underdeveloped for me, but the plot. I think the author was trying to be clever here by having the climactic moment delivered in a news clipping, given one of the MCs was a journalist, but all it ended up being was lazy and unsatisfying. For having waited so long for this story, I was really disappointed in the abrupt and unsatisfying ending. It felt unfinished.
(And be forewarned, if you are reading from an old Kindle, (2010), don't be surprised if you can't read/see the near-to-last-bit. At 2 in the morning I was not hunting around for a magnifying glass to read what I could mostly figure out for myself- by that point I didn't really care overly much.) ...more

Josh Layton writes a mean short story, condensing a man hunt and the fruition of a romance into a perfectly formed tale. There's action aplenty, a car chase, cop killing, hostages and a developing relationship of the friends to lovers variety. Set against the backdrop of a war being fought overseas, this was full of interesting and well rounded characters, and one of my favourite romance types, the stoic man willing to quash his own happiness for the good of others.
