Kristin Cashore did some marvelous things with this book:
1. She took the "being beautiful puts me in danger" trope and made it work, frighteningly so. Instead of rolling my eyes, I felt genuinely terrified for Fire in places, especially in regards to her interactions with males (like when her father hints "you have to watch out for me, too" - AUUUUUUGH). Creepy and well-done.
2. Oh, my, the relationships. How her childhood friend Archer grew increasingly possessive, how Brigan eventually softened ...more
