I had mixed feelings upon finishing the Forest of Hands and Teeth. I loved the world building, the mythos and the plot, but had trouble liking the protagonist. But I did enjoy the book overall and had no hesitation ordering the second novel in the series.
The second book features Mary's daughter, Gabry. Gabry is definitely a more sympathetic character than her mother and I enjoyed her journey a lot more than that of her mother. I was able to connect with the character and empathize with her patho ...more

Oh, Carrie Ryan, you break my heart. At times while reading it, I wanted to give it 5 stars. At others, I wanted to throw it across the room and give it 1 star. Well, I never give 1 star, but you get the idea. But damn, she writes a good book. I just have to remind myself that "5 stars" doesn't necessarily have to equal "happy". I also have to remind myself that just because a character occassionally might act like a bitch, a crybaby, a scaredy cat, or an idiot, it doesn't mean she's not a good

BRILLIANT!!! I wasn't expecting to completely become obsessed with this series after reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Although I enjoyed the first book, it had that twisted, puritanical feel to it...sort of like The Scarlett Letter with Mary being a modern day Hester Prim. It was one of those books that you never forget and I did feel like reading the second book would be worthwhile, but I wasn't rushing out to buy it or dying of anticipation.

I liked The Forest of Hands and Teeth -- really liked it. Mary wasn't the most likable of heroines, but I think I rather enjoyed how out-there and distant she was at times. I didn't mind the love triangle - I thought that the comparisons to Twilight just didn't stack up because a) it wasn't a main focus in the novel; b) it ended badly. Also, I'm a sucker for any good dystopian novel; add some religious fervor and you have a setting that's right up my alley.

1.5 stars. I really liked the first book, but I heard mixed reviews about this second book, so I am listening to the audiobook rather than reading it. My daughters finally told me to stop complaining to them about this book. Looking back, I would say don't bother listening and definitely don't waste your time reading this mess. I didn't even like the narrator, she was too whiny or maybe she just sounded like that for Gabry.

I found Forest of Hands and Teeth riveting. Plus the title was irresistable. So I pre-ordered this one on Amazon. It was good, but I could put it down. And I did not like daughter nearly as much as I had liked mom. But i will read the next one.
Not sure which one I liked the most - the story lines seemed too simliar, although I enjoyed reading about Mary and Harry and even the return of Odys the dog. The Dead-Tossed Waves didn't seem to have the immediacy to it that The Forest of Hands and Teeth did. Gabrielle's story was interesting, but I couldn't relate to her the way I did to Mary. I loved the whole angle with Catcher, however, and can't wait to get into the Dark City and meet the twin sister, Annah.
