This is the fourth book in the Sabina Kane series. I loved the first three books in this series and the fourth installment has definately lived up to my expectations.

Sabina is a half vampire and half mage woman who live with her mage boyfriend Adam and her minion, the mischeif demon, Giguhl. They are preparing for a treaty between the dark races which will bring about peace but when murders start to happen things go from bad to worse.

It's awkward to review Silver Tongued Devil, the fourth book in the series without at least briefly referencing the events in the previous titles so if you haven't yet read them, and plan to, you might want to avoid this review...

With her grandmother dead, Cain thwarted, Maisie rescued and Sabina settling into the New York mage community with Adam you could be forgiven for expecting that this fourth installment would be lacking the action and urgency of the first three books. In some ways that is accurate, Silver Tongued Devil is more about internal conflict than raging battles. Sabina is struggling to reconcile her vampire and mage halves, and is uneasy about suppressing her natural instincts. She hopes the opportunity to investigate the brutal murders happening in the city, will satisfy her but instead she is distracted at having to work with both Slade and Adam, worried that Adam will figure out exactly what happened in New Orleans. With the added concern of the approaching Treaty signing, Sabina doesn't realise how badly her twin is suffering after the events in The Green-Eyed Demon and seems unable to reach out to her friends. With all this emotional angst, I didn't enjoy this installment quite as much as the first three. It's not only Sabina and Adam not getting along, Giguhl is feeling ignored and despite filling his time with roller derby and a budding relationship with a transgender fairy, his spark seems to be missing. Georgia and Mac's also make an appearance but their relationship is dissolving under the pressure of werewolf law so it's heartbreak all round. It is good to see emotional growth from the characters but I didn't think it was balanced well within the plot. It's not until about three quarters into the story that the action begins, though it has quite a kick. In a shocking finale, Sabina discovers she isn't as nearly as free from her past as she hoped and risks losing everything.

Silver-Tongued Devil is not the best example of this series but skipping over it would definitely leave a hole in the storyline, this isn't a series that can be picked up out of order. The conclusion certainly saved the book for me and left me eager to read the next, Blue-Blooded Vamp, due in June 2012, which will conclude the series.

But Sabina doesn't quite trust that peace is possible so when a series of brutual murders shocks New York, Sabina is the only one not surprised. With the peace talks stalled Sabina and Adam must work quickly to find the killer before everything crumbles around them.

This is the fourth book in the Sabina Kane series (after Life seems to be looking up for Sabina Kane. The threat of war is passed, her family is reunited and her romance with sexy hexy Adam Lazarus is going from strength to strength. But Sabina doesn't quite trust that peace is possible so when a series of brutual murders shocks New York, Sabina is the only one not surprised. This is the fourth book in the Sabina Kane series (after Red-Headed Stepchild, The Mage in Black and Green-Eyed Demon) and moves the series to a whole new level. Previously Sabina was facing off against people from her past, but now there are gods and immortal bad guys coming out of the woodwork and her battles just got that much harder. Again, if you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting at the beginning.

This installment feels more introspective than the others as Sabina is trying to adapt completely to mage life, living only off bagged blood and not killing anymore. She's ended up a little lost between her vampire and mage instincts, especially when a vamp arrives who is incredibly similar to the old Sabina, and there's a realistic search for identity here that had me rooting for Sabina even more. The pacing is excellent from the dramatic start, through all the twists and turns to the "OMG!" ending which had be reaching for the next book straight away.

It isn't just Sabina who is struggling. Maisie has been left badly scarred by her experiences in New Orleans and is locking herself away in her room, refusing to talk to anyone. PW is still firmly clinging to her feminine identity (and ends up becoming incredibly bitchy) and even Mac and Georgia are having issues. The latter is incredibly heart-wrenching and well written with a bittersweet feel.

The setting returns to New York, which also means returning to Slade's club. Giguhl's beloved demon fight club has been replaced with demonic roller derby, which means he swiftly ends up coaching the Manhattan Marauders leading to some brilliant one liners. The return to New York also means that secrets buried in previous books are revealed with far-reaching results.

Sabina's "Things to-do" list remains and is just as awesome as ever.
1. Find a murderer
2. Learn how to be a team player
3. Save the future of the dark races

All in all this was an excellent read and I can't wait for Blue-Blooded Vamp.

The Sabina Kane series has become one of my favorite UF series and this entry was no exception.

Peace seems to be on the horizon for the supernatural community, but when a string of murders threaten the negotiations and appear to be vampire-related, Sabina and Adam are called in to investigate. This book goes to some dark places, not just with the whodoneit mystery, but also with Sabina's relationships and the ultimate threat that the world is facing.

Okay Sabina (and J. Wells) - this book didn't quite live up to the previous three in theis series. It seemed like it wanted to go somewhere and it eventually got somewhere, but it sort of had a hard time getting there. Make sense? Unfortunately you need to read this book in order to follow the story to book 5, but it really doesn't do much except highlight the fact that Sabina Kane doesn't know how to listen and was never introduced to the concept of comment sense. Despite the fact that she's over 50 (?) she pretty much acted like a 15 year old the entire book.

I really like this series, the last book wasn't as good as the first two and I was a little apprehensive about readig this one but I'm glad I did. I found it a little slow in the beginning but it picked up and by the end it was back to the standard I expect.

I thought it was going to be a 4★ book but the ending took it to 4.5★

I loved the twists at the end, it'll be sad to see Sabina end with the next book but I'm excited to see what Jaye gives us next! ...more
