This book is hard to review - hopefully after my group reads it I can update the review.
On the surface this is a fantasy story. Catherine(Cat) and Beatrice (Bee) are cousins who have a close bond (view spoiler). The two cousins were sisters/friends from the start and their relationship felt real. A very elaborate world with intricate politics and history.
Unfortunately, the world building is a bit overwhelming and there are several things I did not particularly enjoy, including the lengthy history lessons and amount of seemingly useless information, the heavy writing style and the slow progress of the story.

I found the cold magic and ice age aspects intriguing, wish there was more about this, but maybe in the next book. Liked Cat, and adored Rory, though wasnt a big fan of Bee. Found the language and mannerisms a bit flowery, but was able to read around them and really enjoyed the story. Reading her fathers last journal made me cry, I hope we find out more about her family in the next book. Not too steam-punk, so dont let that put you off if you're not a huge fan.

This was a dnf for me. I got to page 327 and just couldn't read any more. At that point, I still didn't care about any of the characters and couldn't read one more history lesson.
