I didn't review this originally, other than the rating. Probably because I just plowed straight into the second book. So I'll give it a little bit of a review now, having just finished a re-read.
I came into this after reading the 2 books of Severn's prequel - it made me want to keep going again from the beginning. They don't segue together super well, mostly because Severn is such an asshole in the beginning. But now, with his prequel books under my belt, as well as all 17 books in the series, I ...more

Cast in Shadow Review You know that feeling of when you're hoping that something turns out for the better, even though you're expecting the worst...
Yeah kind of like that. Well that's what I got out of the first book of the Elantra series.

It took about a hundred pages for me to get into this book. For the first fifth of the novel I was lost and in world building overload. Once I got past that point, however, I read it in a white hot fury. I'm going to the library tomorrow to get the next one, despite the hundred or so unread books already hanging out in my house.

Wavering between 2 and 3 stars. This had some interesting ideas, but was dragged down by sloppy writing. Fragments and single-sentence paragraphs abound. Also, a bit of exposition wouldn't have hurt -- there's a ~huge mystery~, but not much is explained in general about the world, politics, etc. Every other character seems to know what's happening except for the protagonist (and since this is third-person limited, the reader). Ehhh.
