2024 Mandatory re-read: What I usually am reminded when rereading KJ Charles books, which I do an inordinate quantity of times, is that the books are *also* funny. In everything else, I tend to forget.
Absolutely fantastic
I read this book years ago and I as I re read it now I realised that as much as the ending was very clear in my mind I had forgotten much of the beginning. Which is a shame as Charles masterfully builds the connection between the two with jokes chats and lustful longing that mak ...more

4.5 stars - I was SHOCKED by how much I enjoyed this book!! It was one of those novels that immediately sent me out to buy EVERYTHING the author has written. This is first and foremost a great Victorian fantasy novel. The romance, which is central of course, just happens to be between two men. So don't feel weird recommending it to people who enjoy a good bit of magic.

This was enjoyable. My first historical, paranormal M/M (I think). I liked that Stephen and Lucian were completely opposite (Stephen is short and squat, Lucian tall and lean). It will be interesting how their relationship develops- there was no declaration of love in this one. In addition, the societal norms and their different stations/ranks. Lucian will be able to get away with far more due to his title and wealth.

Lucien Vaudrey & Stephan Day
I really enjoyed this story. It was full of magic, mystery, and suspense with a bit of a romantic element. Or should I say lustful element, as with everything else going on there was no romance, just two men who are strongly attracted to each and trying to find a way to balance that attraction while trying to stop whatever evil forces are at work.
The Vaudrey family was a piece of work, at least Lucien's father and brother, and I totally agreed with Lucien's sentiment ...more

I probably wouldn't have selected to read this on my own, but it was a highly recommended read by one of my book reading buddies. It's a combination of paranormal and fantasy with magic and mixed with what I would call horror, or that what it came across to me. Mixed in with that is a fascinating story in both world building and characters. It's a very dark story, and I don't read those too often.
