Update 12/27/15 - Uprooted was one of my Top 10 picks for 2015. See what other books made my list on Badass Book Reviews.

I first discovered Naomi Novik a few years ago when I read a copy of His Majesty's Dragon. For those of you who have not yet had the chance to meet Temeraire the dragon, find yourself a copy of that book right away.

I was curious to read Uprooted because I already knew that I loved Ms. Novik's writing style. She takes a character and puts the reader in that character's hea

Random personal anecdote: I've played the piano for over seven years. It doesn't come naturally to me at all. I struggle through every bar of music when I learn something new, and it often takes me over a month to learn a new song. I suck at reading sheet music and figuring out what all those squiggles on paper mean. The structured, scholarly approach to music doesn't work for me at all.

I'm honestly so upset that I didn't love this book--I had high hopes!--but goddammit I found myself bored to tears around 30%... (maybe even before that) T_T

I tried, oh, I tried, but after a while I stopped caring about the characters and their problems, and this is a total deal-breaker for me because I read for the characters, everything else comes second.

And even though it is not the central point of the story, the romance in this book is so weird--it's

I found this to be a very solid fairy tale that was easy to read and had some depth to it. I must confess though....it seemed Agnieszka was a bit too much of a Mary Sue. She was awfully accepting of the fact that she was a witch/wizard and could all of a sudden do all of these spells. Sure there was about 10 pages (approximately) of a "learning curve"...but then, suddenly, she could do EVERYTHING.

Once that happened I got a little fed up with it. Not enough to put it down or to rate it poorly, b

It was nice to have a complete story in one fantasy book.

What I enjoyed:
* Kasia was awesome. She wasn't the MC, but had a good story arc and was interesting.
* Originality in The Wood as the evil(view spoiler)
* the author wasn't afraid to kill characters (view spoiler)

Oooh, this book started out so good! With two best friends living in a small village near the enchanted 'Wood'. And, a majestic 'Dragon' wizard appointed by the King as protector of the valley where they both reside.

The dragon takes a girl from a different village every 10 years; this decade he take Nieska, and not her friend - like everyone was banking on. Nieska has magic; an earthly kind of magic. Like a reincarnated Baba Jaga - magic. Nieska's magic is compatable with the Dragon's magic. Ni
