I'm torn on whether I want to review this as the analyst or the reader.
Because the analyst in me is impressed, sort of. The book gives us an emotional trainwreck, and a convincing one at that. Briony is an incredibly strong character (and when I say 'strong,' I mean that she is well-written and three-dimensional). Her voice is incredibly strong. Hmmm, well, it was good. I liked the weaving in of Old Ones and the Victorian overtones. I liked Eldric and Rose, sometimes I liked Briony. But it just wasn't quite as good as I was expecting. Oh well, I'm having a rough reading year, I guess.

I'm not a huge fantasy reader but this book had a historical fiction feel that I enjoyed. Reminded me of a modern interpretation of The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

3.5 - but I think the intended audience will like it more than middle aged me. I enjoyed the plot and the characters very much. I enjoyed Billingsly's phrasing very much as well. If it goes down a star, I think it would be the editor's fault as much as anything. There were several sentences which were clearly out of place with the voice/feel of the book. Removing them would have cost nothing in terms of plot and character development. I thought the last bit got a little too preachy. And that is

This book is even better on audio!
not really my cup of tea. really interesting world. well built, but I just didn't get into it until at least half way through. I think I just didn't have empathy for the characters. a little bit predictable. mind candy?
