What Members Thought
"The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do." Wonderful and intense and emotional. I cried my eyes out for the last third of the book. Granted, the book totally struck me on a personal level, which I am pretty sure intensified my weepiness. Is that a word? Awesome illustrations.

I did not read a single review of this book before I read it and I'm glad. It was not at all what I expected - a total surprise. I expected a slightly medieval feeling, folksy monster story which this isn't. It is not horror either, which was my other thought. It is the best book I have read this year. I thought it much more genuine, despite the fantastic premise, than The Fault in Our Stars, which is not meant as a dig on another great book.

So impressed.
First of all, I should say that a) this book is way too young for me in concept and b) Patrick Ness wrote The Knife of Never Letting Go, which I detested.
But this was brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous. The concept is nothing new, but done in a way that is whimsical and brilliant and makes you positively ACHE for Conor. Oh my God. There are very few characters who I've felt quite as badly for as this boy. Your heart just breaks for him, hearing how he wants to be punished an ...more

I absolutely loved this book. Ness tackled a difficult subject for both children and adults alike using engaging prose and powerful symbolism. Dare I say this novel helped this 33 year-old come to terms with the same feelings Conor (the main character) had when this same "monster" appeared in my life six years ago? The illustrations and short chapters make this book a quick, but stirring read. I highly recommend it.

This book is every bit as brilliant and deserving of accolades as it's received and hopefully will receive. It's simple yet powerful, and deals with themes of courage and honesty and grief. It's about the monster that lives deep inside all of us, and having the courage to face what our hearts know to be true but our minds may not want to acknowledge. A truly unforgettable novel.

WOW! A powerfully written book that will stick with me for a long time. When the time comes, I want Conor's Monster to call on me to help me let go, too. Or will just having read this book do the trick? OK, maybe that's wishful thinking, but it's still a wonderful book.
