Another fantastic novel from Melina Marchetta. This is on a few mock Printz lists, but I don't think I'll be putting it on mine because, well, I don't think it's really YA. The story is both Tom's (age 21) and his aunt Georgie's (age 42) and it doesn't really fit the YA category, despite being published that way. Other than the age of the protags, it's hard for me to explain why I feel this way, except to say that maybe it's because the novel is so much about the past and what went wrong and how ...more

Amazing. A powerful story about love, loss, and rebirth, full of broken people who are wonderful despite and because of their brokenness. The cameos from Ben (Jellicoe) were a lovely bonus for me, given my love for that book as well, but this was brilliant even without that. High on my list of 2011 award contenders.

That 3 star isnt accurate. I'm not sure what I thought of this. It was jumpy but it had some good parts where you are pulled in. Don't know if the language was confusing or what but I mostly felt like I was on the outside looking in. ...more

Does Melina Marchetta ever make a misstep? Apparently not, because this book is as amazing as her others. Slow building, heartbreaking, and beautifully written.

I loved this, but never managed to write anything coherent about it while the story was fresh in my mind. It couldn't hurt to have read Saving Francesca first, but it's not necessary - I only had the faintest recollection of the earlier book and this is really more a companion piece than a sequel. Marchetta isn't afraid to expect a lot of her readers, with complex, layered characters that demand attention. I would reread this in a heartbeat, especially if it makes it onto this year's Mock Printz ...more

I'm still not completely done with this, and it hasn't been a quick read for me, but I am definitely enjoying it. I think it's just hard watching this family in so much pain, which speaks to the amazing writing. ...more
