An amazing concept, expertly executed.

Gr 8+. A historical multiracial romance overseen by the characters Love and Death, competitors in a centuries-old game where each chooses a human pawn and sets the stakes. This book was unique and original and timeless all at the same time. Is it fantasy or realistic fiction or magical realism or an extended parable or metaphor? Very hard to categorize as both Love and Death play major speaking roles in this book about Henry and Flora - two young people who defy the boundaries of the era they live in.

The ending is better than a three star but the middle part is worse than that so the average is three stars. I see the appeal and the book is very unique---Death and Love playing a game where death is always the winner.
