I absolutely adored this book.
An amazing concept, expertly executed.
Gr 8+. A historical multiracial romance overseen by the characters Love and Death, competitors in a centuries-old game where each chooses a human pawn and sets the stakes. Death always wins... but perhaps the love between Henry and Flora will prove victorious? This novel is incredible but may need a patient, mature reader.

One of my favorite 2015 YA's so far... I think it's got strong Printz possibilities. When I first started reading, and saw the contest that was being set up between two magical beings, I thought, "Wait a minute, this has already been done as The Night Circus. But Brockenbrough's contest quickly takes on its own personality. I love that the romances cross both racial boundaries and sexual identity boundaries, but more than that, this is a lush, beautiful story with the smoky overtones of jazz nig

It took me some time to get invested in the plot of The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough. Once invested, I was hooked.
This book was unique and original and timeless all at the same time. Is it fantasy or realistic fiction or magical realism or an extended parable or metaphor? Very hard to categorize as both Love and Death play major speaking roles in this book about Henry and Flora - two young people who defy the boundaries of the era they live in.
