Anything Jason Reynolds writes is gold and The Boy in the Black Suit is no different. Initially it was a little difficult for me to read because it opens up with Matt's mother dying and that hit really close to home for me - but in a way it made me closer to that character. Matt's mother has just died from breast cancer and now it's on him to start his senior year of high school. He's a few weeks late starting so he loses his after school job he had lined up. Soon after his mother's death, Matt gets a job in a funeral home. He is still grieving his mother and actually finds that sitting in on the funerals of strangers is comforting to him because his pain is a shared thing. He is not alone in his grief. Along the way, he also meets some people who help him start to move on, as they are grieving themselves. I am constantly in awe of Jason Reynolds. Lovers of realistic fiction will savor the story of Matt, a teen whose mother has just died. Matt struggles through his own grief by watching others' in his job at a local funeral home until he meets Lovey, and Matt wants the secret to her strength. Equal parts tender, touching, and laugh-out-loud funny, Boy is a great read for students in grades 8 and up, due to mildly colorful language.
