The best way to approach this book is with absolutely no expectations. Not that it isn't magnificent because it is. Because it's nothing like I've ever read. It's sort of a "Pushing Daisies" in book form - a coalescences for the senses.
It is the story of two magicians who wager in a competition. The rules are not defined. The venue is yet to be determined - but it will be the Night Circus, and the game ends when....? Basically, Prospero (or Hector) discovers he has a daughter who happens to be ...more

3.5 stars. I keep fluctuating between 3 and 4 stars on this one. The last part was excellent - at least 4 stars - but the whole long build up in the beginning almost made me quit reading; however, because it was so different and wonderfully strange I stuck with it.
Ms. Mordenstern is a beautiful writer with a very vivid imagination, so vivid in fact that I had a hard time going along with her sometimes. I really liked the characters but I can not say I really got to know them all that well.

The circus comes to town with no warning...and this book takes a hold of you without warning.
I'm not sure if I can leave an accurate review. This book wa mesmerizing. It was beautiful. It was magical. It's a book, after reading it once, you feel the need to reread it to catch all the clues that were in previous chapters.

This was an interesting book that moved along fairly well. Marco and Celia were a wonderful couple and the plot was intriguing. The Night Circus setting was also fascinating.
One of the problems that I had in the book was the jumping from Bailey's story to Marco/Celia's story. If it had occurred chronologically, it would have been fine, but it kept jumping back in forth in time which caused me some confusion. I don't think it would have detracted from the book to keep it chronological.
